Who We Are

Who We Are

The Fred Carl Jr. Small Town Center (STC) is a community design center that provides meaningful design and planning solutions for small towns across the state of Mississippi and beyond. Our mission is to utilize design and planning tools to improve economic development and the quality of life in our communities.

Our History

The Center was originally established as “The Center for Small Town Research and Design” in 1979 in response to both its geographical location within a rural landscape and to the Mississippi State University School of Architecture’s focus on the American small town. At its inception, it was the nation’s first community design center with a focus on small town issues. Throughout its almost five decades of service and research, the STC has contributed a significant body of knowledge about small towns in modern America. It has served over 100 communities, partnered with over 50 university, state, national and international entities, taught over 20 seminars to students, and invested over 2million dollars in communities through its work.
